Homemade Coconut Oil

Have you ever wondered why coconut is called "coconut"? If you've ever been curious about it, I read a short story on it and decided to share it with you. please note that the story may be true or not.

sailors aboard Vasco de Gama's fleet dubbed the fruit with the name "coco" - because it has a hobgoblin-like, grimacing face. Years later when "cocos" were brought to England, the locals added the "nut" to coco, giving it the name still widely in use today, "Coconut".

coconut is one nut that almost every part of it is useful and can be used to make several recipes ranging from smoothies, coconut rice, coconut milk, coconut oil etc. Today I'll be writing on coconut oil, it's uses and how to make it.

If you search online you'll see different uses of coconut oil. Bloggers and youtubers talk about their experience with the oil. Well mind you, not all of these things will work, you know why? We have different body make up.

Is Coconut oil Good for consumption?

Absolutely yes! Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA's), which are, in great part, comprised of Caprylic acid, Capric acid and Lauric acid which makes it easily digestible by the body.
The oil is also rich in cornucopia of fatty acids and proteins that hold antioxidants and provides health benefits to the body.
I'm yet to hear of a person who is allergic to coconut oil, but it's possible there is.

Uses of Coconut oil
Coconut oil can be used for cooking, skin care and hair growth.

Cooking:  Since coconut oil is easy to digest it is considered one of the best cooking oil and best for weight loss compared to other oils. According to literature from Walter C. Willett, M.D. of Harvard Medical School, coconut oil helps to increase the levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) that aids in improving heart health.

Skin care: coconut oil is rich in anti-bacteria, anti-aging, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a good treatment for some skin problems like; dry skin, skin wound, Eczema, Burns etc.

Hair:  coconut oil is one of my favourite hair oil. It helps repair damage hair and makes hair shine. struggling to grow your front hair? Then massage coconut oil to your scalp. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science found that coconut oil is also highly effective in reducing protein loss in hair which may lead to several hair problems.

How To Make Coconut Oil
There are majorly two methods used in making coconut oil. The cold press method and the Heat method. I used the heat method because I don't have the equipments for the cold press method

3 coconut

Sauce pan/pot

Container (glass jar, oil bottle etc)

1. Shred your coconut using a grater (the one used for okra). Add the shredded coconut and enough water to a high speed blender and blend for two minutes. Sieve out the coconut milk.

 2. Put the milk in the freezer over night or if you don't have one leave it in a place where no one can tamper with it for 24 hours.
You will notice that the coconut a white semi-solid cream has seperated from the water. That's the curd

3.  Carefully scoop out the curd and place it in a clean frying pan or pot on low heat. Stir constantly, you'll begin to notice bubbles, it's a sign that the water is drying out and you should be expecting the oil😋.

4. Stir until you see the white curd turn to oil (not everything will become oil though). Sieve out the oil and when it's cool pour it in a clean container (glass jar, old oil bottle etc.
